What is a travel eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM is a SIM that is built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a mobile plan onto it, usually by scanning a QR code. A travel eSIM from Globalia gives your phone mobile data in the countries its plan covers.
How it works
- Choose a plan for where you are going and how many days you need. Browse our plans.
- Get your eSIM. After payment you receive a QR code and manual installation details.
- Install it while you are on Wi-Fi. It takes a few minutes and you do not need an app.
- Use it when you arrive. Choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. A travel eSIM connects through partner networks in each country, so it needs data roaming on to work.
What stays the same
- Your own SIM and number stay on your phone. The eSIM is added as a second line, so you can still use your usual number for calls and texts. Your own carrier's roaming charges may apply to that line.
- Your apps, contacts and settings do not change.
What a plan includes
Every plan page shows the covered countries, the data allowance and how many days the plan lasts. Where it is known, it also shows what starts those days: some plans start when you first connect, others when you install or when you pay. Some plans can be topped up with more data on the same eSIM, so you do not have to install a new one.
What you need
A phone that supports eSIM and is not locked to one carrier. Check both before you buy.
Plans that come with a phone number, calling minutes and texts say so on the plan page. All other plans are data only, and apps like WhatsApp and Telegram work over their data.
